When Should You Get a Transmission Rebuild?
This is a question we hear often at Escalon Transmission. Full custom transmission rebuilds are a specialty service we offer, and we take great pride in the quality of our work. This is why we back all transmission rebuilds with a 3 Year, 100,000 Mile Warranty program.
However, when should you consider a transmission rebuild as a customer experiencing transmission problems? The answer may depend on a number of factors, including the mileage on the transmission and the extent of the damage. Let’s take a look at some repair options and which may be best for you based on your specific transmission situation:
Transmission Service vs. Transmission Rebuild
Keeping up with standard transmission maintenance is a great idea if you want to avoid major transmission failures and repairs. Standard transmission maintenance includes replacing the transmission fluid, filter and pan gasket to keep clean fluid running through the system. If you ignore maintenance, then you can start to increase wear and tear on various transmission components. Ultimately, the problems can become so bad that you need to consider a rebuild or replacement.
Transmission Repair vs. Transmission Rebuild
In some cases, the transmission problem can be traced to one or two specific components. As long as the rest of the unit is healthy, you may just be able to repair or replace certain parts. In other cases, doing this is only a temporary fix as various other components will be in various stages of wear. You may find yourself having more transmission problems in the future as one thing fails at a time. Doing a full rebuild may be a better long-term solution, depending on the overall condition of your transmission.
Transmission Replacement vs. Transmission Rebuild
Lastly, you may be experiencing major transmission issues and the damage is beyond simple maintenance or repairs. In this case, you are generally looking at two solutions: transmission replacement or transmission rebuild. Transmission replacement means removing the entire unit and finding a new, used or refurbished one to replace it completely. Sometimes, this is the only option to consider if the transmission unit is damaged beyond repair.
In most other cases, however, the transmission can be professionally rebuilt by a transmission rebuild expert like our own CJ Jennings. The transmission can be dismantled. All good parts can be properly cleaned and reinstalled. All damaged/worn parts can be replaced. The entire transmission is rebuilt piece-by-piece to get it running like new again.
If you are experiencing transmission trouble, the best first step is to schedule an inspection with a transmission specialist. Don’t wait too long. You may be able to catch a minor issue before it develops into a major problem!
