Transmission Replacement vs Transmission Rebuild

Transmission Replacement vs Transmission Rebuild

When a vehicle’s transmission is damaged beyond a simple repair, there are usually two solutions that may be considered: transmission replacement or transmission rebuild. There are many factors that may determine which is the better option. It’s also important to understand that not all transmissions can or should be rebuilt.

In this article, we will discuss the differences between transmission rebuilds and transmission replacements. This information should prove helpful if your mechanic is recommending one of these major transmission repair services.

Transmission Replacement: The Basics

A transmission replacement is pretty simple to understand. Your old transmission cannot be repaired or rebuilt, so it needs to be replaced with a new, used or refurbished unit. A suitable replacement transmission should be tracked down to match your vehicle’s year, make and model. It may be a brand new transmission unit directly from the auto manufacturer, or it could be a used transmission from the same type of vehicle (or a compatible vehicle). You do have to be careful with used transmissions to make sure they are in good working order. There are also used transmissions that have been rebuild or refurbished, which should provide a longer lifespan if the work was done correctly.

Obviously, a new transmission is the best option because it won’t have any wear and tear, and it will generally come with a good warranty. A refurbished/rebuilt unit may also have a warranty attached, which will provide additional peace of mind. A used transmission with no warranty is more of a risk, but of course will be the least expensive option.

Some automotive shops may recommend a transmission replacement as a default solution. They may not have the technicians, experience or resources to perform a transmission rebuild or make certain transmission repairs. It is always a good idea to seek a second opinion from a transmission specialist before authorizing a transmission replacement from a general auto repair shop or dealership.

Transmission Rebuild: The Basics

A full custom transmission rebuild is a more labor-intensive process than simply swapping out the transmission unit. However, it is typically a better solution when available. It allows you to keep your original transmission in the vehicle. It will simply be rebuilt so that it is running like new again. This is a process that takes a skilled transmission rebuild specialist.

The transmission is removed from the vehicle and completely dismantled. Each part is carefully inspected. Any parts that are still in good shape will be cleaned and reinstalled. All damaged/worn parts are replaced with fresh components. Ultimately, the entire transmission is rebuilt entirely, one piece at a time. Then, it is reinstalled in the vehicle and thoroughly tested to make sure it is running properly.

If an auto repair shop or transmission repair specialist recommends a transmission rebuild, be sure to ask some questions about their process. See if it is a procedure they do in-house or if they send it out for someone else to rebuild it. The second option usually takes longer to complete and could increase the price of the service. Also, ask about any warranty coverage attached to the transmission rebuild.

Not all transmissions can be rebuilt. Sometimes, the internal or external damage is beyond repair, so a full transmission replacement may be the only option. Many modern continuously variable transmission (CVT) systems cannot be efficiently rebuilt. A replacement is generally recommended rather than trying to rebuild such a complex transmission, which could end up costing more than a new CVT unit.
