The Most Common Transmission Fluid Problems

The Most Common Transmission Fluid Problems

Many transmission issues happen because of transmission fluid problems. The transmission fluid plays a vital role in transmission health and performance by providing critical cooling. Lubricating and hydraulic functions. If there is a transmission fluid problem, it can lead to serious internal transmission damage. You may be facing major repairs, or possibly a full transmission replacement or rebuild.

Here are some of the most common transmission fluid problems to look out for:

Transmission Fluid Leak

If you notice transmission fluid leaking under your vehicle, it should be a major concern. You will want to get it inspected and fixed as soon as possible to avoid further transmission damage.

Low Transmission Fluid

You can check your transmission fluid level and quality. If the level is low, it could be the sign of a problem or you may simply need to top it off. Just make sure to use the correct automatic transmission fluid for your vehicle and transmission type!

Burnt Transmission Fluid

As the transmission fluid gets old, it can get burnt, dark and crusty. In that case, it won’t perform as well and could lead to further transmission problems. If the fluid is getting old and losing viscosity, it should be replaced (along with the transmission filter) as part of a standard transmission maintenance service.

Milky Transmission Fluid

Milky-looking transmission fluid is generally a sign that water or other moisture has gotten into your transmission fluid lines. This is a serious problem that may require flushing and/or cleaning the transmission pan and fluid lines.

Dirty or Contaminated Fluid

Sometimes, dirt, debris or other contaminants can get into the transmission fluid and hinder performance. Or, the fluid lines could be clogged with old fluid or other materials. Again, you may need to have the lines flushed and cleaned to remove the contaminants before fresh fluid is installed.

Metal Shavings

If there are ever metal shavings found in your transmission fluid, it is generally a sign of serious internal damage. Some parts are grinding together without proper lubrication and the shavings travel through the fluid lines. An internal inspection of the transmission may be required. This involves removing the transmission unit from the vehicle and opening it up to inspect for any internal damage.

These are some of the most common transmission fluid issues. If you think you have a transmission problem or notice any problems with your fluid, contact Escalon Transmission today at (209) 838-0113 to schedule an inspection. You can also request an appointment time online.
