Do You Have a Failing Torque Converter?

All vehicles with automatic transmissions feature a torque converter as part of the transmission system. It is a critical component that enables the transmission to shift automatically between gears while you drive. It is one of the key differences between an automatic and manual transmission. The torque converter converts power from the engine and turns it into hydraulic pressure, and it is basically what helps do all the shifting for you.

A failing torque converter is one of the most common automatic transmission issues. It can fail or start working improperly, which then can cause damage to other internal components. When we open up a transmission to inspect for internal damage, the torque converter is often the source of the problem and a key focus of any transmission rebuild.

If you think you have a failing torque converter or other transmission issues, you’ll want to get your vehicle checked out by a transmission expert as soon as possible. Here are some of the symptoms you can look out for:

Gears Slipping

Automatic vehicles are design to shift automatically between gears. If everything is running right, the shifts should be relatively smooth. A failing torque converter can make shifting rougher or you may notice it slipping into and out of certain gears.

Not Shifting at All

When a torque converter has failed completely, you may not be able to shift at all. Or, certain gears may be unavailable. If your transmission won’t engage or shift into any forward or reverse gears, then you likely have a torque converter issue.

Sluggish Acceleration

Another common sign of transmission problems is when the vehicle feels unusually sluggish upon acceleration. This means it isn’t shifting or engaging properly as it switches between gears, and this could be because of the torque converter not working right.

Overheating Transmission

A failing transmission can overheat just like an engine that is running too hot. If your transmission starts to overheat, you will likely see a dashboard warning light or specific computer message. An overheating transmission is a significant problem that you will want to get inspected and repaired as soon as possible. Your vehicle may be very dangerous to drive if the transmission is running hot.

Transmission Fluid Issues

Your transmission fluid can tell you a lot about the health of your transmission, including the torque converter specifically. If you notice a fluid leak or that the fluid itself is dark, milky, burnt or filled with any debris such as metal shavings, it is a clear sign of a problem. You may smell burning coming from the transmission or the fluid level could be too low. Transmission fluid issues might just mean you are overdue for service. However, fluid concerns along with any of these other symptoms can mean there is something wrong with the torque converter or another important internal component.
