6 Signs of Transmission Fluid Problems
One of the most common causes of transmission failure is the transmission fluid itself. Automatic transmission fluid (also known as “transmission oil”) performs vital lubricating and hydraulic functions throughout the transmission system. If the fluid isn’t doing its job, then you can quickly begin to experience problems. Components can suffer from excess wear and the internal issues only get worse from there.
At the first sign of a transmission fluid problem, you should take your vehicle to a local transmission expert. If you live in the Escalon area, Escalon Transmission is here to help with all your transmission inspection, maintenance and repair needs. Here are some signs of transmission fluid issues:
Fluid Leak
An obvious sign of a transmission problem is when you notice transmission fluid leaking under the vehicle. It is usually a bright red in color and leaks would generally come from near the front/center of the vehicle where the transmission is located. Any fluid leak should be taken very seriously, especially if it’s transmission fluid.
Low Fluid Level
Another thing you can do is check your transmission fluid level regularly. If it is lower than it should be, you may be overdue for a transmission service. Or, there could be some other problem causing a low fluid level, such as a leak.
Bad Transmission Fluid
Fluid quality and consistency is also important. If your transmission fluid is dark, thick, burnt, dirty, milky, watery or full of debris, it’s a clear sign of a transmission issue. Again, you may just be overdue for a service if it is getting a bit dark and thick.
Shifting Troubles
Low or bad transmission fluid could cause you to notice various shifting problems. Your vehicle may be sluggish to accelerate or have trouble shifting into certain gears. It may slip between gears or grind noticeably.
Burning Smell
Low transmission fluid may also cause internal components to grind together without lubrication, which could lead to smoke, unusual sounds and bad smells. A sweet burning smell is often associated with failing transmission fluid.
Warning Lights
Low transmission fluid could cause your check engine light or transmission service light to illuminate. A more advanced vehicle computer system may offer specific transmission warning messages, such as overheating or low fluid level.
