How Does the Transmission Rebuild Process Work?
One of our specialty services at Escalon Transmission is a full custom transmission rebuild backed by our 3 Year, 100,000 Mile Warranty program. When your vehicle has internal transmission damage, a complete transmission rebuild is often a better solution than a temporary repair. It is also recommended over a transmission replacement, as long as the original transmission can be rebuilt.
In this article, we will discuss some of the important details about the transmission rebuild process at Escalon Transmission. We will also share some benefits of transmission rebuilds compared to transmission replacements and less extensive transmission repair services.
The Transmission Rebuild Process
Most general auto repair shops will send out transmission rebuilds to be done by a specialist. Some transmission specialty shops may not even offer this advanced service in-house. Escalon Transmission’s team of transmission technicians is led by owner, CJ Jennings. He has spent a lifetime disassembling and rebuilding transmissions. He is expertly trained and certified to get damaged transmission units running just like new again.
First, the transmission is removed from the vehicle and completely disassembled. Each component is carefully inspected for damage and wear. Any parts that are still in good shape will be professionally cleaned and reinstalled in the transmission housing. Any failing components will be replaced with new or refurbished parts. The transmission is rebuilt piece-by-piece, reinstalled in the vehicle and thoroughly tested by the Escalon Transmission team. Each step of the process is meticulously managed to ensure the transmission is as good as new. This is why we are able to back this service with such a strong warranty.
Transmission Rebuild vs. Transmission Repairs
In some cases, only specific transmission repairs or maintenance services (like changing out the transmission fluid and filter) may be the only thing you need to get your transmission working properly again. In many cases, one failing component can have a snowball-like effect on the entire transmission system. Multiple parts can sustain damage or excess wear. You can replace the primary source of the problem, but later issues could arise as other parts begin to fail. It can be an unending cycle of headaches and costly repairs.
When the internal damage is significant enough and multiple components are affected, a full transmission rebuild may be recommended to address all the issues at once.
Transmission Rebuild vs. Transmission Replacement
Many general auto shops and transmission repair facilities may recommend a complete transmission replacement. This could be because they don’t offer rebuild services or they don’t know how to repair the existing transmission unit. At Escalon Transmission, we view a transmission replacement as a last resort. It is only recommended when the transmission is damaged beyond repair or is a type of transmission that cannot be rebuilt. Many modern CVT (continuously variable transmission) units are not compatible with transmission rebuilds, and some older units may not be worth trying to rebuild.
When a transmission does need to be completely replaced, we can help track down a new OEM (original equipment manufacturer) unit from the automaker or a dealership. Or, we can find better deals on used or refurbished units. We make sure they are working properly and installed correctly to fit your specific vehicle year, make and model.
